The Artist’s Handbook :: a Guide to the Business of the Arts
Today, in order to be successful, artists not only have to produce their art, but they have to market it to its potential audience, and work with and manage their relationships with the many role-players within the arts industry and supporting fields. It is a tough and often confusing business.
The Africa Centre has conceptualised a book that simply and succinctly provides artists with the tools to manage their artistic talents as effectively as possible. In so doing, the book promotes professionalism in the creative industries. The Africa Centre is proud to publish The Artist’s Handbook :: a Guide to the Business of the Arts.
The first of its kind created specifically for artists working in Africa, the Artist’s Handbook provides artists with the administrative tools they need to administer, manage and distribute their creative work more effectively, thus maximising income, and individual and organisational sustainability.
The Artist’s Handbook contains a collection of articles, interviews, extracts from presentations and original pieces of writing by professionals who wish to share their experiences and expertise.
The book is divided into three sections. The first presents business and administrative information relevant to all artists and art forms. Section two contains information specific to the performing art, whilst section three highlights relevant information for visual artists. Each section provides vital information that is relevant to all art practitioners and no section should be read in isolation.
Copies of The Artist’s Handbook cost R50 and are available from the Africa Centre offices at 44 Long Street, Cape Town. Contact Ethel on 021 422 0468 or info@africacentre.net
The Artist’s Handbook is a tool that must change and adapt to meet the changing needs of contemporary art practice. For this reason we urge all who use it to provide constructive and critical feedback, affirming the important sections and pointing out the gaps. Write to us at handbook@africacentre.net.
