SPIER PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL

Spier Performing Arts Festival

The Spier Performing Arts Festival has left the Spier Estate, and will be “INFECTING THE CITY” from 26 February to 2 March. Curated by Brett Bailey and Jay Pather, a diverse programme of works will be presented in Cape Town squares, fountains, museums and theatres in the inner city. There is contemporary dance, theatre, performance art, and smatterings of opera, choral music and Indian and African dance, as well as an exciting workshop programme. We encourage you to spend a couple of days in the city centre, enjoying the wine and restaurants, and attending several shows: free outdoor performances during the day, and a range of ticketed works at night.

Dramatic productions from some of SA’s foremost theatre makers:

  • NOT WITH MY GUN: a bachelor party for four Jozi buppies turns nasty when a white burglar breaks in. An explosive drama directed by Aubrey Sekhabi and starring Anthony Coleman and Meshack Mavuso (Isidingo’s Vusi). R60
  • ISIVUNO SAMA PHUPHA: Magnet Theatre’s haunting ritual drama about a man caught up in his career until his neglected ancestors step in. Directed by Mandla Mbothwe and starring Faniswa Yisa. R50

Unusual theatrical events with casts of thousands:

  • DREAMTIME: an enthralling exploration of dreams from some of South Africa’s greats: Madala Kunene, Sibongile Mngoma, William Kentridge, Acty Tang, to name a few. R100
  • TALKING HEADS: A unique talkshow in which you get to have intimate dialogues on the future with some of Cape Town’s most intriguing thinkers, movers and shakers. R100

New collaborative works in stunning outdoor venues by leading Cape performers, directors, choreographers and designers:

  • WAKING TIME: a striking dance piece in the Adderley Street Fountains looking at the tension between our waking and unconscious selves. FREE
  • AN ORDER OF PASSAGE: a displaced family visits the Provincial Government for help, but The System is bigger than they imagine. FREE
  • 22 MINUTES 37 SECONDS: a mad, fabulous whirlwind of hi-jinx: roller skaters, cartoon characters, dancers and musicians disturb the order of a city square. FREE

Contemporary dance in unconventional inner-city arenas:

  • TRANSPORTS EXCEPTIONELLS: from France, a man in a moving, exhilarating dance duet with a giant earth-moving vehicle. FREE
  • MISTERIOS DA ACTUALIDADE: an apocalyptic “Afro-punk” dance piece from one of the hottest young companies on the Mozambican dance scene. FREE
  • I AM CINNAMON: a collaboration between songbird Melanie Scholtz and Cape Town’s top dance company, Jazzart. FREE

PUBLIC WORKSHOPS in THE PERFORMING ARTS

The development of new thoughts and approaches is
central to the ongoing development of performance that captures
the complexities of our contemporary lives.

As part of the new Spier Performing Arts Festival, a programme of public workshops has been put together by theatre veteran Liz Mills.
Performers, designers and performance makers are invited to attend these workshops by leading South African experts in theatre-making, design, dance and vocal performance. This is an opportunity to extend the boundaries of your art, work into the finer details of your craft, and indulge in creativity.
All of the courses have two parts to them. In most cases each part is self-contained, but you are encouraged to participate in both. Courses have a limited capacity, so book early to avoid disappointment.

The fee for each part is R80.
Please book courses through Computicket.
For any information please contact the Africa Centre:
