SPARCK - Space for Pan-African Research Creation and Knowledge

The Africa Centre’s first three-year residency programme

SPARCK is a multi-sited, multi-disciplinary project. It is structured around a series of residencies for artists of all genres from across Africa and the African Diaspora. A wide range of exhibitions, performances, screenings, Internet radio link-ups, roundtable discussions and are planned, along with initiatives engaging the local community and the public.

A triennial programme, the theme for the first three years (2009-2011) of SPARCK is “Trans-Local Cultures in the Making of African Worlds”. All of the creators involved will engage in a discourse around this theme, exploring the role of African cities and the unique dynamics that are at play in a globalised context.

SPARCK brings Cape Town and South Africa into a lively exchange with networks of urban artists, arts collectives, activists and scholars from three countries: Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal.

Through its multiple programmes, SPARCK aims to foster novel, cross-disciplinary and trans-local partnerships and projects, many of which will go on to have lives far beyond the Africa Centre.
